Learn respiratory mechanics, technically sound test performance, quality appraisal and a systematic approach to spirometry reports and curves.
Begin with physiology and measurement
Start with airway anatomy, pressure, airflow, elastic recoil and dynamic airway compression. Build a clear understanding of FEV1, FVC, ratios, predicted values, lower limits of normal and z-scores.
Learn how a reliable test is produced
Work through preparation, contraindication screening, infection prevention, coaching, acceptability, repeatability, equipment verification and the technical errors that can distort a report.
Interpret curves as well as numbers
Use volume-time curves and flow-volume loops to recognise normal, obstructive, suspected restrictive, mixed and technically limited patterns. Explore bronchodilator response while keeping diagnosis in its clinical context.
